Math Playground

Welcome to another
Fudge Featured Friday!
Where I show you a site I found and love so much I just GOTTA share with you!

With school back in session many of you may soon be looking for ways to help your kids with dreaded homework.  Or maybe you are just looking for a fun way to support the concepts they learn during the school day!  Maybe you are homeschooling and need a fun but active learning tool to occupy one kid while you help another.

Enter...

I LOVE this site.  Since I am still sorta kinda hoping to put my kids back into public school when we arrive at our new location, I am constantly looking for ways to homeshool that support the Common Core Standards.

This math site has everything!
AND
They have activities listed by Common Core Standard for each grade!

Some of my kids favorite games so far include:

Seriously...  This site has been AMAZING for when I need to work with just one kid at a time.  If I absolutely HAVE to find something to critique about it...  I do wish the site was a little easier to navigate for younger kids.  You kind have to pick and choose and hope that the game your kid selected is one he knows enough math concepts to play.  We have been slowly figuring it out, but... again.  I LOVE it!

Ahhhhlaska!

I am posting late and from my phone but I had to share a tiny bit of our trip so far!

After several plane delays we finally arrived "home"! And it is great to be here! So far it has been bright and sunny! Perfect weather for the State Fair, where we saw 1000 pound pigs and pumpkins big as small cars. Wr have fed Stellar Jays. We had a beautiful drive to Ninilchik River, where we spotted Beluga's. We fished a little and got one silver salmon but spotted a lamprey eel!

Today it is raining so we plan to head to Homer to the Oceans and Island Exhibit and tomorrow.... Fishing for the Halibut! Get it... Halibut... Ha ha. What a worn out Alaska joke.

The only thing I feel lacking is a nice camera to take perfect pictures of this heaven! We missed our family and our Alaska home.

And for some reason blogger won't let me post pictures right now! I guess you will have to wait!

Chevron Sewing Desk

Welcome to
Whipped Up Wednesday!
Where I share something I just whipped up!  Or... something I worked hard on, but... it's something made by me!

Since we have decided to homeschool the kids for part of this year due to a few extremely possible military moves, I have been on the look out for the perfect desk or table for the kiddos.  The most frustrating part about this is?  I actually have the PERFECT table, but it is in storage with the rest of our things in South Dakota!  RGG!  I have a hard time paying for something I already have and don't really want two of.

After searching Craig's List, thrift stores, garage sales, and Flea Markets with no luck, maybe I am too picky or cheap, I posted my frustration on Facebook!  Then I get a reply that one of my friends has seen something that might work down the street as their neighbor just put out the trash!  YEAH ME!

We go over to get it and find out it is actually the house of ANOTHER friend from church. So, we are loading up their trash garage work table and explain why it is treasure and how we are gunna chop it shorter to be a kid desk.  Then they say, "You know.  We actually picked up a really cool desk from the side of the road and were going to get rid of it too.  We only brought it back in the garage cause it's kinda nice and it was raining!"
Seriously!  He said the top had been ruined, but he had created a new top.  It was sorts dirty and scratched and bumped, but wow!  So the trash table went back to the trash and this little baby went into our truck!  The card table that my sewing machine is on is long and a good length for a school desk.  And now I will have a new SEWING DESK!
I immediately set out to taping and painting what you see above!  It was so fun.  I taped out the pattern and gave my 7 year old and her friend paint brushes and told them where to paint while I went outside and sprayed the desk!  I hind sight I might have painted the desk black instead of blue, but...  I HAD blue spray paint and NOT black!  I like using what I have.  Also... I am not afraid of crazy colors!
While the desk is not showcased in fabulous glory living in it's current location, this will have to do.  The rental we are in for now is small and has HORRIBLE lighting.  BUT I have a very colorful, inspiring desk to sew near.  It has drawers that fit my 2.5 in strip collection perfectly.  I LOVE having a little drawer right below my machine for scissors and thread.  And...  It is perfect for now!

YEAH ME!

Volcano Dino Dig Cake

Welcome to
Tummy Tickled Tuesday!
Where I share a yummy recipe or cooking tip or... something food related at least!

My son turn 3 last month.  Yes... I know.  He is evil and rude.  All that growing.  I have tried to teach him not to, but... he just doesn't listen!  Anyways, I had a fun Spongebob Cake all figured out in my head and when I mentioned it to him he said, "I no want a Bob Bob Cake mommy.  I want a Dinosaur Cake."  Okay... Dinosaur cake it is!

So one day he was NOT wanting to sit on the toilet and poop.  He doesn't like to wait and I don't like it when he does so...  I sat on the edge of the tub and googled "Dinosaur Cake" pictures!
He saw TONS he liked! But... it was a spewing Lava Cake that caught his attention!  His other favorite cake had non-toxic dinosaur bone toys baked right into the cake! Way cool.  So I told him he would have to choose.

or

Imaginatively, he said, "Mommy.  You can make a Volcano WITH dinosaurs IN it.  You can mommy."
Duh... why hadn't I thought of that!
The cake itself was pretty simple.  Betty Crocker is my friend.  I made two 8 inch rounds for the base.  After layering my rounds I shoved these little guys...
Right into the cake! I didn't want to take the time to run around finding non-toxic toys that I could bake.  So I opted for toxic dollar store dinos that I simply washed!
Then I cooked a box and a half in a glass bowl for the top!  After letting everything cool I spread chocolate frosting and Oreo crumbs on the whole thing!

Here is the part I wanted to share.  How I made the LAVA!!!
A cookies sheet covered with foil and heavily sprayed with no stick spray.
Then I lined up Life Savers and popped them into the oven for about 5 minutes on 350.
WATCH THEM!  Cause they get to this stage quickly.
WHILE THEY ARE IN THE OVEN carefully use a point thing to swirl the colors together a little bit.
THEN pull the sheet out and slice where needed as the cool with a knife so they will break apart where you want.
Some of them I carefully took out and draped over a bowl so they would cool in a curve!
(Do you like my Fancy Life Saver cooling holding tools?)
When everything is cooled put them on!
My mistake?  Using applesauce in place of the vegetable oil.  It makes the cake moist and yummy, but... with such a heavy tall cake...  Let just say that by the time we were ready to eat our Volcano had.. IMploded.  But...  Still looked alright.  Not fantastic but... A 3 year old doesn't care.  He really just wants cake!

Pinteresting Hot Chocolate

Welcome to
It's a Pinteresting Monday!
Where I share 10 things I found through Pinterest.
Today's theme is....
HOT CHOCOLATE!

Yes. Yes. I know summer is barely at it's end, but the hubby and I have an obsession.  As soon as the kids are tucked in tight, we set a pot of water on the stove to boil!  Even though we are living in Florida and it's hot outside!  We boil water and whip up whatever concoction that happens to be our favorite at the time, then we snuggle up on the couch and watch whatever TV show we are into on DVD that happens to be our new favorite!

We should be on a plane to Alaska soon to visit family and with fall looming it's little head... I figured everyone would enjoy a list of yummy Hot Chocolate recipes!

I figured smaller sizes would be good for someone!
CLICK HERE to download these 4 to a page!
And yet smaller still with 6 to a page!
These would be good for clipping to a ring for easy memorization on the go!

The End of the "Tail"

Welcome to
Thawed Out Thursday!
Where the thoughts in my head come melting out!

Wow... who would think that loosing our dog would cause so much chaos in our home.  Not me, that is for sure.  Our dog Gable is truly the most perfect dog in the world.  And, while he does get ignored, at least by me, some days, is is ALWAYS there.  He never asks for anything but to go outside when Daddy gets home.  Seriously, we have to ask him if he wants to go potty.  He is almost 11 years old.  And by this point the hubby and I know him pretty well.  Gable has been with us since a week after we first met.  Every memory we have has our dog in it!  He has NEVER run away!  So when it did happen it was a shock.  He was scared of the storm and he had gotten in trouble and I guess he just freaked when I put him outside.  It is VERY hard to keep your composure so that your kids don't freak out.  We were out looking for him 5 minutes after he was gone.  But, even though he is old, Gable can still run!

We did everything we possibly could right away.  We searched in the car for 4 hours, then we went home to eat and I made laminated posters to put up.  Over the course of 3 days we had over 45 flyers up all over town, I called every vet in the county every morning and around 4-5 when the were closing, I posted the flyer on the local dog park FB page AND on my personal page.  I asked friends to put tiny flyers in their car windows, I called and visited the local shelter.  I prayed and fasted with family and my kids prayed too.  I think the hardest thing was the not knowing.   I felt strongly that he was ok, but I just didn't know where he was!

It was hard for me to do simple things around the house.  I kept thinking, "I do this everyday.  I should be doing SOMETHING to find him."  Forget blogging, quilting, or preparing school lessons.  I took care of the kids and did what I could to find our shaggy black baby!

Apparently it all paid off!  The shelter takes pictures of the dogs they get in and updates their site automatically.  I had just checked the site about 30 minutes before, but...  just felt the need to check it again.  I was shocked to see a picture of what to me looked exactly like our Gable!  I admit.  I check the literature and only 16 % of lost dogs are returned to their original owners.  While I truly felt something telling me he was ok, I was attempting to wrap my head around the fact that he might not come home.  I was speechless when I ran back to the kids room to ask Aurora and Tyton to come and look at this picture and tell me what they thought.  Yep... they agreed with me!  We shoed the friends home, luckily they are dog lovers and totally got it, and headed to the shelter.  I again attempted to remain calm.  I put the kids in the car, forgot my shoes so I had to go back inside, then forgot my purse, got back in the car, then forgot my phone!  Calm was hard, but on the outside I think I did my best! But, what if it wasn't him!

I passed 4 cops while going 10 miles over the speed limit cause I knew the shelter was closing any minute.  I am shocked I didn't get a ticket.  We got there 3 minutes before close.  The doors were locked, we pounded, they let us in, they called back the kennel attendant, I rushed to the back and there he was!  In a kennel between two snarling pitbulls.  He was clean.  He was healthy and knew me right away.  He was sitting in there fine until I came.  Then he rushed to the side of the cage and licked my hand.  While I signed papers to get him out they gave him a rabies shot, cause... in my panic I seriously couldn't remember what vet gave him his rabies shot.  So I told them I would just pay for another one!  Then they chipped him and brought him in!  He ran right over to me and the kids and sat down at our feet, wagging his tail!

Of course when we got home it was no big deal for him.  After the hubby laughing and smiling everyone petting him he went to his bed and fell asleep!  Poor baby.  He had to much fun on his adventure I suppose!

Since my last real post was about losing Gable I figured you guys deserved a good wrap up to the "tail"!  I truly had all good intentions of blogging everyday, but with losing our baby and starting homeschool on monday...  Life happens I guess!  I hope that this post is the start of some blogging normalcy!  Even if I am WAY past normal!

Traveling with Kids List

Welcome to
It's a Pinteresting Monday!
Where I share a few things I found via Pinterest.

This weeks theme is...
Traveling With Kids!

We have a few road and car trips coming up very soon!  A drive to Texas, then a 6 hour plane to Alaska, then plane back to Texas and drive back to Florida.  The a week later we are driving from Florida to South Dakota to get our coveted junk from storage!  Well... not junk, actually.  It's our entire household goods, but... we won't get into that mess!

Our kids are abnormally good at traveling.  And it's not just because they are military brats!  Last road trip we went on started at 7 AM and they didn't even ask for a movie until 7 PM!   Perhaps part of that reason is that I try to find a new way entertain them each time.  A new fun place to stop and stretch, a fun game... Anyways... here are a few pins that I loved!

Our Lost Dog

Today's post is not long or eloquent.  Our beloved dog, Gable, was lost yesterday.  I can't help buy blame myself, although nobody seems to agree with me that I should.

We have had Gable for over 10 years.  My husband got him outside a grocery store while we were still dating and in college.  He has been with us through 3 children, 8 moves and many other trials.  He has quite literally save my husbands life on one account and protected me and the kids in many others.  He has never needed a leash.  He always stays close and comes where we call.  He was our baby before we had any.  He was obedient to a T and as perfect as any dog can be.  He is our friend and our protector.

He is deathly afraid of thunderstorms.  Yesterday I heard one coming on so I let him out to pee since he won't when it is storming.  About 5 minutes later the lightening hit.  And my daughter comes running in to say that Gable had pooped on the floor.  I was not happy.  I never yell.  But I yelled at him because he knows better.  I pushed him outside to force him to potty and locked him in our room while I cleaned the poop.  When that was done I went to let him out cause... I can't stay mad for long.  He had peed on the foot of our bed.  And not just a little.  I was furious.  I heartlessly shoved him outside to pee in our unenclosed yard.  The rain had died down by now and the sun was back out.  It never rains for long it seems.  My daughter says, "Mommy, what if he runs away?"  I told her he wouldn't cause he always stays on the porch.  I put the sheets in the washer and came to open our bedroom window while I angrily cleaned the pee.  He was gone.

I figured he was in the backyard, but my heart sank so I ran outside and called for him.  He didn't come.  I left the pee in a puddle on the floor and told the kids to get in the car.  We looked for 2 hours.  I called my husband and he came and looked during his lunch break.  We have called or visited all the vets, PAWS and the Police.  The lady at the police station gave the kids stuffed dogs.  My middle son named his Gable, which I hate because he played with it all day and broke my heart every-time.

I am trying hard to be happy and positive.  Hopefully someone will call soon, but...  My families spirits are shattered.  Especially my husband.  Every 5 minutes we all seem to stare out the window for our lost dog.  I keep thinking I will seem Gables happy fluffy tail zoom past the window.

All I can think about is how angry I was and how then he was gone.  How could I do such a horrible thing to animal we all love so much.  Look what I have done to my kids and my husband.  Yes, worse can happen but it just doesn't feel like that right now.  I woke up at 3 am and haven't been able to get back to sleep.  I know once the kids are up I will be better.  A: I have to put on a brave happy face for them.   B: They keep my occupied.  But when nobody is around I just cry.  It's horrible.

Please just pray for us.  That our Gable is safe and that he will come home.  That our hearts are healed and our spirits lifted.  It hasn't been 24 hours but it feels like a lifetime.
Thank you.

No-Sew Curtains

Welcome to
Whipped Up Wednesday
at Sherbert Cafe.  Where I share something with you I just whipped up!

This week I want to share with you the curtains I created for our "School Room".
My wonderful Family Closet/Laundry Room is being reorganized and rearranged to make way for a special place for homeschooling this year.  Since the whole house was supposed to be only our home for a tiny bit really NONE of our house here is decorated.  I just couldn't bring myself to spend cash to decorate something for a little bit, especially when I have all that same decorating stuff in storage!
But... I want the School Room to be a happy comfy place, so curtains were really...  inevitable!
This tutorial really needs no super long explanation because it is that easy!
I simply got about 1 yard of fabric and sliced it into strips that were 2.5 inches by width of the fabric.
Then I cut those strips into 4 equal sections.
All of the windows in this house have these already in place from the previous owner.  I simply got some cheap ribbon I had on hand, eyeballed the width of the window, and then sat down to watch Psych with the hubby on Netflix!  As we watched I tied the strips tot he ribbon near the ends and Voila!  Curtain done in one episode!  Or was it two?  Yep two.
The one where he the Halloween episode where they are at his old camp AND the one where his mom is kidnapped by the Ying Yang Killer.  That one was crazy!  But good.
I was to lazy to tie it up last night, but this morning I just tied the ribbon ends to the little thingys by the window!  I love it!  And... no it isn't raining.  We live in Florida and it is that humid today!

It also matches perfect with my 88 cent weather chart from WalMart.  I we are getting excited for school!

School Lunch Planner at Anything But Perfect
Ok... Lunch at my house seems to throw me off.  I LOVE creating fun lunches, but it does seem to be that random middle day thing that you HAVE to do cause you HAVE to eat.  Maybe a meal planner for lunch would work wonders with homeschooling this year?
