Personal Revelation Flowers

Here is my Visiting Teaching Handout for April 2010! This month it's on personal revelation. I decided to do something Spring-like! Everyone loves flowers right? So why not give some to the friends you visit teach?

First review the lesson put out by the church this month. (Click here.)

You will need this stuff for each set: 2 pencils, 2 thumb tacks, 1 piece of paper, green pipe cleaner (or ribbon)!
First you are going to need some cute paper for the petals. I used 12 x 12 that I cut to 8.5 on one side so it would fit into the printer. I didn't cut an inch off the other so that one flower would be slightly bigger! (Plus I was being lazy.) All I did for this month was type up some word strips. Which can be downloaded here or at the end of this post! Add your names to one of the petals so that you don't have to create a tag. (Or don't and then make a leave tag... rggg... why didn't I think of that sooner?) Print them onto the cute paper!
Cut the papers in "Almost" half! Ha ha... Pretty much just cut 1/2 inch in front of the 2nd column of words.
Next, cut your words strips.... duh!

You will be making 2 flowers. You can mix up the papers or make your papers match! Whatever! I was gunna make mine match, but I cut them all at the same time to save time and didn't want to have to pick through them. See how mistakes can pay off sometimes!
Anyways... Grab your thumb tack and then fold (but DON'T press flat!) each of the strips, sticking the ends of them onto the pointy part of the thumb tack!

*Note- Be sure when you are layering your "petals" that the words are facing the right way when pressing them onto the tack!

Now push the thumb tack with petals into the eraser end of your pencil and.... Presto!!!!

You have the top of your flower! I tied mine together with a green pipe cleaner to make leaves, but I like the idea of making a "Leaf" tag. ;(

Enjoy!

Paper People

I'm a total cheap-o and my creative side kinda helps with that.... sometimes! Anyways, when I had my 3rd baby my mommy came to visit. She brought the usual swarm of gifts for the other kiddos. One of the gifts she gave my daughter was a paper doll set to play with during church. Of course... even though it's girly... my 3 year old son wanted to play with it too!
When thinking of gifts to be from the Easter Bunny paper dolls were totally on my list. Not only are the cheap but they are too easy! The hardest part is cutting them out right? (Hopefully, I can enlist MrSherbert for help there.) All I needed to do was find some paper dolls I liked! I was searching for things a brother and sister could play with together. AND... in hopes to dumb down the girly factor I will be calling the Paper People now!

Ahh... the wonders of google! Where would we be with out it? Below is a list of PEOPLE I liked. Some I just thought were neat. Some will need to be colored. Some are colored for you. Some you can color online and then print! Oh la la!

BillyBear4Kids.com - Nope, not a bear, but a site where you can download the dolls or color them online! MANY, MANY, MANY to choose from here.
Fancy Animals - Not really dress up, but they looked neat!
Severus Snape - This site says that Remus, Sirius, Harry, Ron and Hermione are coming soon, but since it was created in 2007... I doubt it! :( Sad!
Super Boy - 1 colored and another 2 color-yourself!
Super Girl- 1 colored and another 2 color-yourself!

Imagination Library

Ok... perhaps I'm a little behind the times with this, but I AM BLONDE! (How long before I can no longer use that excuse?)

I have just discovered Dolly Parton's Imagination Library (Thank you Kylie)! In a nutshell it's one free book an month until you kiddo is 5! We LOVE the library! And we LOVE books at our house. We are totally book nerds, so this program is PERFECT for us! I just signed up my 2 little boys and I can't wait to get their first books! I will let you know how it goes!

Braided Roll Bun

This was an attempt to do cauldron for a Pot of Gold for St. Patrick's Day. It didn't quite turn out, but it was cute and I didn't have time to play with it!
I started by doing a French Braided Hair Band. You don't have to do this. My little girl has a plethora of fly away hairs so I like to keep them out of her eyes. Then I pulled it all back into a pony tail and looped a ribbon through one piece of elastic. I pulled the ribbon so the elastic was at the middle portion of the elastic.
Divide the pony into 2 sections one each with a part of the ribbon.
And braid the sections into 2 braids using the ribbon as one strand of the braid.
Next, use matching or contrast ribbon and tie the end of the braids together. I then rolled the braids from end to tip around the ribbons so that you have ribbons sticking out the ends of the roll.
When you have rolled it all the way up tie your ribbon into a bow to secure the rolly thing! Presto! A cute braided bun thing!

Shamrock Hair

I got this idea from my favorite hair blog, PrincessHairStyles.com. She did 3 petals... I attempted 4. It's much easier to do than it looks, but does take some time! To find her step-by-step instructions, click here! It's pretty much her heart hairstyle, which I LOVE LOVE LOVE! It stays in soooooo well AND it's cute!

Easy Knot Twists

A lady at the grocery store saw my daughters hair the other day and I though... Hmm... I should post how to do these! They are way to easy, so I never throught about it, BUT I was blown out of the water by how easy they were when a friend first showed me! Just thought I would share!
First, grab 2 sections on the front of your head.
Notice that one side is much smaller than the other!
Tie them in a knot! Then keept wrapping the 2 pieces around each
other until the are wrapped about 3-4 times each.
Pull Tight!
Secure with bobbypins.
Keeping working back and doing as many as you want! I usually pull all the extra pieces back of my daughters and tie them with a bow!

Ribbon Flowers

Ok... Sherbertbear surprised me with a visit last weekend and we made some korkers! But in addition she showed me how to make these! She is amazing! Since she is in the process of vaca and moving I took the liberty of busting out mega gobs of ribbon and my camera to create a tutorial! I'm sure her flowers would have looked better..... ;)
First find some satin ribbons that you would be willing to cut! I cut mine into about 4 inch sections. 2 of the pink and 5 of the brown. I did make the pink a little longer since I knew it was going to be at the back.
I then lined them all up so pretty for the picture. Notice that they are going from big to small... really you can make them all the same size, BUT I'm weird and apparently can't cut things all the same size. Luckily with this type of flower it doesn't matter. It will look great either way!

OK... SherbertBear suggested using a birthday candle, but a yummy smelling votive is what I had! I'm sure I planned it this way in an attempt to make the house smell good instead of melted satin! I cool like that. Anyways.... Burn the edges of your pieces first. (Pic below) Fast seems to go better as you get less burns spots that way! The ribbon will naturally shrivel the way you want. If you would like more curl to them simply hold one end and place the whole ribbon a little over the flames. It curls fast this way so move it when you need to quick!

I would also like to note that when SherbertBear was showing me how to do this I was trying way to hard to be perfect. Just go for it... they turn out cuter!

Tack find something cute to spice up the middle, or leave it plane. I happened to have a short piece of ribbon left over from the korker bows that matched. Tack them all together with a brad! I also put tiny dots of hot glue between the different layers just to help it stay together. After this you can attach the flower to whatever kind of clip you like! SherbertBear likes Alligators... I like the full out clips that pop open when you push the sides.... not sure of the technical name... Hmmm.... I shall call them Side Pushy Clippies.
So easy right! Email me your pictures at sherbertcafe@gmail.com!

Rainbow Ribbons

First get some rainbow colored ribbons ready! Mine were about 24 inches, but this will depend. Also... I did use the cheap ribbon that is about .47 per roll... I DON NOT recommend using the kind that has the cute loops on the sides. The caught in her hair and made it difficult!
Start by slicking back her hair and putting a half pony on the side!
Then thread the ribbon through on piece of the elastic. ( I don't tie it around cause it always seems to fall out of my little girls hair!)
Tie those into a tiny bow, leaving one streamer side REALLY long! The thread that through a plastic needle. I started with purple and worked backwards on ROY G BIV
Carefully weave the ribbon through her hair. Note: You don't have to try really hard to keep the spaces to even between the weaving. It's going to look amazing when you are done!
See! I told you! The ribbons stayed fine throughout the day just leaving the ends
loose. I even let her
sleep in it, just to see
how it would hold. Frizzy, but still stayed! I cause her hair is fairly fine and everything seems to fall out!

Seuss Piggies

OK... so Seuss's birthday was last week, but I forgot to post her cute hair! I didn't take step by step pictures, but it's pretty easy.

All I did was give her a cute "S" part and put in the 2 piggy tales.
Next I took a chenille and bent it in half to make it more stable.
Wrap her hair around and around the chenille in different small pieces until it is covered and secure the tip with a clear elastic. I decided to not pull her hair all the way through at the tip to give it a cute loopy!
Last bend and twist the chenille-hair-piggy tale to your Seuss delight! See... EASY CHEESY!

40 Days Through the Book of Mormon

This months Visiting Teaching message is entitled, "Strengthening Faith in God the Father and Jesus Christ through Personal Scripture Study." It made me think of a small photo book that I was given a couple years ago by our Relief Society Presidency. I searched everywhere for one, but I couldn't find anything like it to simply print off. I did find this from lds-yw.com! The file was even called "40 Days Closer to Christ." How fitting! So I decided to create my own little album for the sisters I visit teach!

Pretty much just print of the file I created. I included excerpts from the message in the Ensign. And make sure to place the Weeks messages at the right spot. I figured out there was more room in the book at the end and it was a pain in the patootie to scoot everything down. I also typed my testimony into the file, but I did remove it so your could add your own! After printing I placed each days schedule on a 4x6 piece of cardstock. (I just purchased a pack that was precut and on sale at Micheal's.) I then slipped them all into the cheapest photo books I could find!

I truely enjoy going through this little book. Even if it's just for the quote or scripture for the day, it's a good Book of Mormon study guide.

To download click here!

Ok... call me a perfectionist, but I created another file. This one has more than 1 days schedule on it. And the pages are true 4x6. Technicaly all you need to do for this one is print, cut around the edges (NOT up the middle), fold each page in half, then slip it into your photo holder! Easy cheesy and no need to search for a photo holder that will hold 60 like I did!

Sub Sheets

Here are some sheet's I created to put in the teacher's binders. This way when they if they know they are going to be gone the sub has a little more info about their class!

Fall Hand-print Trees

Ok... so this isn't as much crafty as it was a fun way to spend time with my kiddos. It started when we made hand-print turkeys! They just enjoyed it a little to much. They started tracing away and of course then wanted me to cut them out!

All I did was tape a paper trunk to our wall. After I cut out each hand-print I would put tape on it and they took turns putting the "leaves" on the tree and tracing more hands. Took us quite a while, but they had sooooooooo much fun!

Hand-print Turkeys

This is a very simple Thanksgiving project! All you need is...

Construction paper
Glue
Scissors
HANDS!!!

All I did was have the kids trace their hands on paper and then cut them out! I did help a little cause they got a little tired of cutting the fingers. Next layer 3 hand-prints and cut and glue the beak and eyes. Use your own judgement as to how well you kids to with glue. I used a glue stick, so they were able to pretty much do it themselves!
They did love tracing a little to much though.... Click here to see what became of that!

Door Signs 2

Ok... I made another one just because the kit was cute and I was trying to see if I could make something using word only. So... hopefully my goofing off will benefit someone! hee hee!
